Mother's Day in Intramuros

This Mother's Day, Neil asked me to join he and his mom exploring Intramuros in downtown Manila... It was a chance to see some very old history here...
Intramuros (The Walled City), located along the southern bank of the Pasig River, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century and is the oldest district of the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Its name, in Latin, intramuros, literally "within the walls", meaning within the wall enclosure of the city/fortress, also describes its structure as it is surrounded by thick, high walls and moats. During the Spanish colonial period, Intramuros was considered Manila itself.

Looking across to the Manila Hotel...

Some of the existing fortifications...

A view of Manila... Across the golf course (golf is very big here for those that can afford it)

Some of the gardens at the edge of the walled city...

More gardens....

One of the vaulted buildings still left standing...

Neil and his mom.... Happy Mother's Day....
